Phil Hughes Loses $500k Because of Rain

Phil Hughes signed a deal earlier this year with the Minnesota Twins that included different types of bonuses that can be achieved.

One such bonus guaranteed him a payout of $500,000 if Hughes pitches 210 innings this season. On Wednesday September 24, 2014, Hughes pitched his 209th inning, and in the 8th inning, with 2 outs, one more out for him to hit the 210 inning mark to activate the bonus, the skies opened up and rained poured down.

The game would be delayed over an hour, and it was no longer prudent to put Phil Hughes back in, and with only 4 games left in the season, it is unlikely Phil Hughes will pitch again to get that last inning.

Don’t feel too terrible for Hughes though, he is on a three-year $24 million deal, and already made bonuses for reaching 180 and 190 innings.
