The Life and Times of a Ping Pong Hustler
Marty Reisman was one of the best ping pong players in the world, who played hustled the game and won enough at one point to become a three-time millionaire (although he has lost a significant amount back as well).
Reisman won 22 major table tennis titles between 1946 and 2002, including two United States Opens and a British Open.
In 1997, he became the oldest player to win a national championship in a racket sport by winning the United States National Hardbat Championship.
One of Reisman’s favorite tricks involved breaking a cigarette in half from across the table. He would also spot opponents a lot of points, play sitting down, and sometimes play blindfolded.
Marty always preferred the classic ping pong table as opposed to the new rackets that the Japanese introduced with sponges that make the ball spin more.
Reisman passed away at the age of 82 on December 7, 2012, but Gravitas Ventures chronicled the final 3 years of his life.
