The World’s Most Expensive Postcard Sold – Pablo Picasso Postcard

Would you pay $188,000 for a postcard? Well that’s exactly what someone did.

A postcard with a signed drawing by Pablo Picasso sold for a record $188,000 (166,000 Euros) on June 20, 2015.

The sales set a “world record for a postcard” according to the auction house, Bietigheim-Bissingen.

The buyer, who is a “trans-Atlantic collector”, won by a telephone bid following a bidding frenzy in English, German, French, and Russian.

The bidding was started at 100,000 Euros.

The card is from Pablo Picasso which was sent to his friend, the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire and is dated September 5, 1918.

The postcard contains an authenticated drawing that “can be considered part of the artist’s cubist still life series.”

The picture on the back of the postcard is a simple aerial view of the southwestern French town of Pau.

The postcard itself apparently never made it to Apollinaire because Pablo Picasso addressed the card insSpanish, writing his friend’s name as Don Guillermo Apollinaire.

Therefore the postcard is marked with the French equivalent of “return to sender”
